First blog post ever!

This is my first post on my very own blog!  I'm finally getting some breathing room from all the activity at the beginning of school and thought I'd start a blog like everyone else (well, everyone whose blogs I've been visiting, anyway).  So here it is!

Mrs. Speech's room is to document all those ideas and great finds I have that I just have to share with someone.  Lately, I've really been impacted by how many of those unintelligible kids have auditory discrimination issues.  It seems that every time I get one of those kids that are mixing up random sounds, I delve further and find that they aren't discriminating the sounds correctly when they hear them.  So of course they aren't saying them correctly!

A free resource I want to share to help with this is The Listening Room, by Hearing Journey, which is a forum that was created to support cochlear implants.  You have to log in to view the resources, but boy, are they awesome!  The Compass Test is an auditory discrimination assessment, from which you can determine which level to begin the Listening Ladder Activites.

Bulletin Boards

I know it's been a while since my first post - here's to a new year and new possibilities! Maybe I'm different than other speechies out there, and I'm certainly different than all the teachers in my school, but I only do my bulletin board once a year. I have one large bulletin board in my elementary room, and I use it to keep individual data charts for each student. I had a mine craft theme for my bulletin board last year. Every student who came in commented on it. It was great for starting off those speech and language samples! I'd love to hear what creative things you did for your speech room!
